The American Discovery Trail ends here. The Point Reyes peninsula is north of San Francisco along the California coast. The national park is home to over 1000 species of plants...

...and animals. The tule elk are easy to spot on the hills. The coastal area of the 71,000 acre park has quiet bays populated by ducks, heron, and numerous other species of birds.

Robin and Patty couldn't have picked a more perfect Califonia day to end their cross-country hike. With less than an hour until the hikers' arrival, a crowd of wellwishers forms. Representatives of the American Discovery Trail and the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation set up banners at the "finish line."

With a strong wind blowing, strong stakes are required. Who will be the first to spot Robin and Patty? Here they come!

Over the last 9 months, Robin and Patty averaged about 20 miles per day. Today's hike is a short jaunt north along the coast to Limantour Beach. The finish line is in sight. Their walking sticks helped them cross many a mile.

They made it! The last step of a 5,057-mile hike. Hooray!

Robin Grapa, #1 daughter and aplastic anemia survivor. Patty Laatsch, #1 mom and caregiver. Time to greet family and friends.

Patty and her husband Keith. Keith's support was vital to the ladies' success, keeping them supplied along the trail. Hugs from wellwishers.
